Is the Republican Party on the way out and the Tea Party taking over? The Tea Party does not mesh with Republican direction, but their supported candidates are Republican. It's more like Republicans have bent a bit to take advantage of Tea Party successes. But they definitely are on different paths.
Basic Republican political culture doesn't agree with Tea Party objectives. Republicans have never been conservative, they're just more conservative than Democrats. Tea Party folks seem to be basic traditionalists and believe in the basic tenets of the US Constitution; a Constitution they see being trashed by the current administration and congress.
The present Republican backlash at the Tea Party is the first flareup. The Democrats in November will be the second step. The distinction is that the Republican party feels it from within as their preferred candidates lost. The Democrats will feel it should their candidates lose to Tea Party backed Republicans in November.
The Tea Party at present is not a political party, it's still open to question where the Tea Party will go. Will the movement become disorganized and disappear, will it grow and take over the Republican party, will it become a third party; who knows.
For right now the Tea Party is a bit euphoric and today the Republicans are feeling the pain of not embracing voters who feel neglected by mainstream Republican direction. But this whole episode of Tea Party vs Republicans/Democrats just emphasizes that the two major political parties are not very different from each other.
The mainstream of each will continue to take the US down the path of socialism and interminable national debt. They'll quibble over what it's called, but it's the same path. The Tea Party is today's manifestation of voter backlash. Fortunately, it's having some effect and slowing the inevitable trek to socialism.
Ponder what's happening and get out and vote come November,
JD

Good article, MEPP. I am (as you well know) on fire about the November elections. I cannot WAIT to vote out as many politicians who think they "own" Washington as I possibly can, and I mean politicians of either party. The Constitution is what it is, and I want it followed to the letter. Guess that makes me a Tea Party animal, eh.
Excellent comment, MEPP. We can only hope that the American public will not become disinterested by Nov 2 and fail to follow their conscience.
I count just under 7 weeks until election day.
