January 01 2016 -- How'd it get here so quickly from May 28 1941

Country Churches 2016 Calendar

When I was younger back in the mid-1900s, I couldn't even envision I'd be around when we moved into the 2000's, much less still be around after we've all gotten used to saying Twenty Sixteen.  Not that I thought I'd die young (none of us think that, right) but it just seemed to be so far down the road.

Even after the kids started popping up in 1970, 1972 and 1974.  Heck, they'd all be getting up to their 30s by 2000.  Now they're all into their mid-40s and one grandchild has a wedding scheduled for next Labor Day weekend and he'll be 23 at the time.  How long will it be before I have to add the prefix 'great' and become Great Grandad (I prefer using the short version of Granddad, not as many characters to remember), not that I'm not already a 'great' grandad anyway...aren't we all.  ;)

So, come May 28 2016, I'll turn the BIG 7-5.  Hopefully I'll be around to check it off on the superb Lang Country Churches Calendar hanging on the wall above my computers.

JD, moving into the new year here in the Big Town of Savage

PS - If you're gonna buy any Lang stuff, wait for sale prices, cause the normal prices are outrageously high.

No Politics Friday - I'm in the habit now

I just want to remind you that it's time for NPF (No Politics Friday) again. I must say that I am definitely enjoying the breaks from the daily need to filter Main Stream Media brainwashing of the public about Obama's electioneering trip paid for by Government funds.

NASCAR's in Michigan this weekend. Not the best racing on that easy driving 2 miler, but it's better than having to watch the NFL. Monday's Watkins Glen race was excellent. I love to see CUP cars road racing and the show at the Glen was great.

10 oz Pound Cake

I've decided that I am truly out of touch with the real world. Yesterday was just one more example of me ignoring today's realities.

As stores are wont to do, Shoppers Food Warehouse in Maryland City routes you thru the produce and baked goods department first. If you've read this blog over the years, you know that I definitely have a sweet tooth and find it difficult to pass thru the baked goods section without seriously thinking about buying...donuts anyone!!!

I came across this lemon flavored pound cake for $1.00...sounded good to me, so I bought one to go with the huge apple fritter I also fell in love with.

When I got home I was storing the few items I bought and noticed the pound cake inside the box appeared to be kind of puny, certainly less than I expected. I perused the box and found that my 'pound cake' was actually a 10 oz cake.

It's probably my own ignorance that caused me to expect a pound cake to weight 16 oz, but as I've said before I'm kinda 'old school' and not up with today's terminologies in many cases. I have to assume that 'pound cake' refers to a type of cake rather than the weight of the cake.

Even at 70, I learn something every day here in the Big Town of Savage,
JD

PS - Lemon pound cake was really good...even better with some strawberries and whipped cream over it.

Honor Our 44th President

Evidently there is a movement underway to provide a special Honor for our current, the 44th, President of The United States.

I only know about this because I received it in an email this morning. I'm posting it here today since it's not political and doesn't break my NPF long weekend promise.

Maybe if you check google you might find a website to support this movement.

No Politics Friday - First Weekend A Success

I must say that it was a completely laidback, enjoyable long weekend with No Politics. I read nothing, watched nothing on TV and didn't read any political emails. By Sunday nite I was ready to lay back and watch my latest Netflix movie.

I must now have the No Politics habit ingrained...I couldn't bring myself to get serious about all the posturing I saw today in the few newspaper articles and internet sites. No, I think I'll be laidback on politics this week until NPF arrives for the weekend.

That's the latest NPF info from the Big Town of Savage in the Diverse State of Maryland (O'Malley's words, not mine).

Do good stuff; have some fun,
JD

PS - Netflix movie got only a rating of 2 from me. I'll have to spend more time reviewing these things before I add them to my queue. But you know how things can be when friends recommend something to you!

No Politics Friday - Starts Friday, July 29, 2011

Today marks the beginning of No Politics Friday for Thots from the BToS. Henceforth; I will post nothing political on this blog on Friday; nor will I read political posts on other blogs.

I will use Fridays to wind down for the weekend. Political crappola can resume come Monday each week.

Ponder it,
JD

PS - I also will not read nor send political emails. Nor will I read or post political items on facebook.

Full Moon - Little Sleep

What is it about a night with a full moon that limits my sleep. It seems that invariably any night with a full moon will be a night where I wake multiple times and have difficulty getting back to sleep.

All the blinds are closed and the shades are pulled, but still the light sneaks into the house and keeps me awake. I made it to my computer before 4 AM today because we're in the throes of a full moon.

Or is it just that as I age I tend to have more difficulty sleeping anyway and the added light from the full moon just exacerbates the situation. I don't know the answer, but me and full moons ain't all love like they were when I was younger.

I do know that there are times when your mind is focused on a particular life problem and that once you wake, your mind just gets to churning and you can't shut it down again. Maybe it's a combination of the two that inhibits sleep.

OK, we've solved it, the light from the full moon wakes you and your mind gets to churning; thus no more sleep tonite.

Blank Minds and Email

You are correct. My mind is obviously completely out of sorts. It's hardly been a day since I posted humor and here I am again posting a new batch of EMAIL STUFF that made me chuckle. Nice part of the deal is that if you stumbled on to this blog, you can just click the little arrow thingy up top and visit another.

Regarding email; there is nothing worse than receiving an email with a non-descriptive Subject Line of the sort "watch this video", "read to the end", "FW: " or any of seven million other inane, non-informational items.

A proper subject line should inform the recipient of the email's content such that they can decide if they should or shouldn't open an email, whether they actually want to read an email, and any other pertinent information regarding the content...

Ponder it,
JD

Points to Ponder

1. I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes.
2. There are two kinds of pedestrians: the quick and the dead.
3. Life is sexually transmitted.
4. Healthy is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
5. The only difference between a rut and a grave is the depth.
6. Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.
7. Have you noticed since everyone has a camcorder these days no one talks about seeing UFOs like they used to?
8. Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again.
9. All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
10. In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.
11. How is it one careless match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?
12. Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, 'I think I'll squeeze these dangly things and drink whatever comes out?'
13. If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a song about him?
14. Why does your OBGYN leave the room when you get undressed if they are going to look up there anyway?
15. If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?
16. If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, then what is baby oil made from?
17. Do illiterate people get the full effect of Alphabet Soup?
18. Does pushing the elevator button more than once make it arrive quicker?
19. Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?
20. Do you ever wonder why you gave me your email address?

Diversity - Racism - Politics -- Revisit

The following post was dated February 1, 2009, just 12 days after Mr. Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of The United States. It's now 19 months later and, if anything, mainstream media reports of racism are increasing, not decreasing.

I believe that most Americans today don't think of a person's race, unless something triggers a thought; typically that trigger is the main stream media.

A major premise of the United States is the acceptance of different heritage and beliefs which includes all races. Can't we just get on with life and forget racial designators in media reports and, more importantly, in our day-to-day lives?

Ponder it and do something about it,
JD

It occurs to me that President Obama's message of 'CHANGE IS NOW' and asking that all of us work together to create a greater America might actually imply that working together would create similar ideals and ideas.

Main Stream Media coverage of United States society seems to take every opportunity to celebrate diversity, the differences of individuals in our society. However, if we are to all work together toward common goals we need to remove diversity and beliefs from the forefront to be replaced with working together and common good.

Black History Month may have passed as a useful tool to educate US citizens. I believe Black History Month has gotten to the point where it has become a divisive tool. I don't recall when it started but I do know that I hear many non-blacks asking "Why don't we have an XXXXX History Month too?" Black History Month is divisive to a large segment of the US population. We need to ignore race and get on with life.

All racially designated items in our culture have passed their usefulness in a society that is celebrating all United States citizens coming together as a single entity to institute President Obama's goal of 'CHANGE IS NOW' in the way we live and do business. Diversity celebration needs to be minimized in today's society as it only creates ill-feelings among diverse groups. We should be embracing togetherness, not diversity.

Ponder it,
JD

DST - Can it be that time again???

I gotta tellya up front, I ain't a fan of daylight savings time. I'm an early morning guy vice late night guy. I kinda like the idea of the sun shining when I get up instead of waking up in the dark.

I've been told that next Sunday, Mar 14, is the changeover and we'll set our clocks ahead an hour. Today it was daylight at 6 AM here in the Big Town of Savage. Next Sunday it will be getting daylight at 7 AM...that's a real bummer for a guy that gets up before 6.

Warm spot in the spring day will be later, more like after lunch rather than before lunch. I guess the plants don't know the difference, but I sure do.

Then comes evening and where it's getting dark around 6 PM now, the sun won't be setting until 7 PM or so.

Instead of things quieting down in the evening here in the BToS, they'll be rowdy. Folks will be walking the streets and cars will be running up and down the road. People will be cheering because they can extend their evenings. To me, it's just entirely too much action at a time that should be quiet around my house.

In the years I've been alive our whole society has shifted from an early day business structure to a late day business structure. When I was a kid you could go to the local department store at 8 in the morning, now most stores don't even consider unlocking the door until 10. On Sundays, many don't open until 11 AM.

I like quiet evenings. I guess maybe I'm just too old and remember how peaceful life used to be. Daylight savings time doesn't endear itself to my way of life.

I formally object to the change.

Ponder your life under daylight savings time,
JD

PS - It's just like my government, I don't really have a say in what they do; why should this be any different!

It's Gonna Snow Again - Bummer

Did you ever wash your car and then before the afternoon is over it rains and the car's full of water spots? I felt like that today.

We had about 45" of snow here in the Big Town of Savage...the snow ended about 2 weeks ago. You can see in the foto that I had a huge amount of snow on the rear deck and steps.

I normally don't use the deck steps too often anyway as there are other doors that are convenient to enter/exit the house. Being lazy as I am prone to be in my old age, I decided to see just how long it would take for the sun to melt the snow from the rear deck and the steps.

After two weeks, the steps were almost clear and the upper deck was pretty clear. I decided this afternoon to take the shovel and clear the steps and a walkway to the driveway from the upper deck.

The task was not very taxing and went by pretty quickly. Afterward, I came into the house, fixed a glass of iced tea and sat down to catch up on my email. One of the services that I subscribe to provides daily and emergency weather reports directly to my inbox.

"Winter Storm Watch at 'BToS', until 6:00am, Fri Feb 26, 2010"

That was the subject line of the email. Further down in the email it states, "ACCUMULATIONS...POTENTIAL FOR SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 OR MORE INCHES"

Damn I was pissed...here I had just taken advantage of 2 weeks of snow melting and cleared a path from the back door to the driveway and we're gonna get 5+ inches of snow beginning tomorrow night.

My first thought was just natural irritation at this reversal of forecast and fortune. My next thought was to go back outside with the shovel and put the snow back on to the steps in an effort to assuage the 'snow gods' in hopes that Happy Snow Gods would play in someone else's yard tomorrow night.

I guess winter isn't over after all.

Ponder it,
JD

PS - Thursday, February 25, 2010...it did NOT snow after all and the ol' steps are looking pretty good.

Some Vintage Puns to Ponder - 1997

1. A group of chess enthusiasts had checked into a hotel, and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. "But why?" they asked, as they moved off. "Because," he said, "I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."

2. A doctor made it his regular habit to stop off at a bar for a hazelnut daiquiri on his way home. The bartender knew of his habit, and would always have the drink waiting at precisely 5:03 p.m. One afternoon, as the end of the work day approached, the bartender was dismayed to find that he was out of hazelnut extract. Thinking quickly, he threw together a daiquiri made with hickory nuts and set it on the bar. The doctor came in at his regular time, took one sip of the drink and exclaimed, "This isn't a hazelnut daiquiri!" "No, I'm sorry", replied the bartender, "it's a hickory daiquiri, doc."

3. A hungry African lion was roaming through the jungle looking for something to eat. He came across two men. One was sitting under a tree and reading a book; the other was typing away on his typewriter. (It could happen.) The lion quickly pounced on the man reading the book and devoured him. Even the king of the jungle knows that readers digest and writers cramp.

4. There was a man who entered a local paper's pun contest. He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

5. A guy goes to a psychiatrist. "Doc, I keep having these alternating recurring dreams. First I'm a teepee; then I'm a wigwam; then I'm a teepee; then I'm a wigwam. It's driving me crazy. What's wrong with me?" The doctor replies: "It's very simple. You're two tents."

6. A man went to his dentist because he feels something wrong in his mouth. The dentist examines him and says, "That new upper plate I put in for you six months ago is eroding. What have you been eating?" The man replies, “all I can think of is that about four months ago my wife made some asparagus and put some stuff on it that was delicious... Hollandaise sauce. I loved it so much I now put it on everything -- meat, toast, fish, vegetables, everything." "Well," says the dentist, "that's probably the problem. Hollandaise sauce is made with lots of lemon juice, which is highly corrosive. It's eaten away your upper plate. I'll make you a new plate, and this time use chrome." "Why?" "Everyone knows that there's no plate like chrome for the Hollandaise!"

7. An Indian chief had three wives, each of whom was pregnant. The first gave birth to a boy. The chief was so elated he built her a teepee made of deer hide. A few days later, the second gave birth, also to a boy. The chief was very happy. He built her a teepee made of antelope hide. The third wife gave birth a few days later, but the chief kept the details a secret. He built this one a two story teepee, made out of a hippopotamus hide. He challenged the tribe to guess what had occurred. Many tried, unsuccessfully. Finally, one young brave declared that the third wife had given birth to twin boys. "Correct," said the chief. "How did you figure it out?" The warrior answered, "It's elementary. The value of the squaw of the hippopotamus is equal to the sons of the squaws of the other two hides."

8. A panda walks into an Old West saloon and growls "GIMME SOME FOOD!" After wolfing down (panda-ing down?) the food, he draws a six-shooter, plugs the piano player dead in the back, and heads for the door. The bartender hollers "Hey! You just killed my piano player, and you haven't paid me for the food!"

The panda replies "Idiot! I'm a *panda*! LOOK IT UP!" And away he goes. The bartender looks up "panda" in the dictionary and finds: "Large furry marsupial of the Asian continent. Eats shoots and leaves."

KENDEL for Governor of Maryland - EHRLICH

Maryland needs a divided government. The Democrat run government we have now is out of control. One would hope the Democrats that are running the state would have some interest in fiscal responsibility, but apparently they can only do one thing; Maryland's Democrats SPEND my money and want more, more, more...

Republicans have no chance of picking up any steam in the Maryland house or senate in the upcoming election next year. Forget any effort there.

The Republicans also have no chance of winning the 2010 gubernatorial election against 'Pretty Boy O'Malley' by running rehashed candidates of old. The Republicans need a new approach for their candidate. Bob Ehrlich was a great change for Maryland. With him as Governor and the legislature dominated by Democrats, nothing of consequence got done. Divided government is great.

However, Bob Ehrlich is not a viable candidate against today's 'Pretty Boy' governor. Bob has no pizazz and he'll flounder, never quite making the grade, given Maryland's Democrat-skewed demographics. The Republicans need a 2010 candidate for Governor that is cut from a different mold. Maryland needs someone comparable to Alaska's Hockey Mom for governor. Maryland needs Kendel Ehrlich as our Soccer Mom Governor.

She's bright, energetic and knowledgeable of Maryland politics and government. Best of all she's never held elective office, which is a plus in today's society. Go Kendel...

I've already ordered my bumper stickers, shown above.

Ponder it and let me know what you think,

Twenty Ten...efficient - Two Thousand and Ten...not efficient

My research and smart money indicate that it's more efficient to say 'Twenty Ten' than it is to say 'Two Thousand and Ten'. Saying only two words vice saying four words makes sense to me any day. Plus if we think back to 1999, it was 'nineteen ninety-nine' vice 'one thousand, nine-hundred and ninety-nine'...three words vice seven words.

Efficiency always wins out, as long as the process isn't run by our Government!!!

Ponder it and take appropriate action to implement,
JD

2010 - Twenty-ten or Two-thousand-ten???

Tomorrow's January 1st of 2010. This begs the question, will you say 'twenty-ten' or 'two-thousand-ten'??? Or will it just become 'ten'. Or something else.

When 2000 came around, I heard most folks calling it 'two-thousand'.
In 2001, I heard 'two-thousand-one' and as the year wore on, most folks were just calling it 'oh-one'.

That seemed to continue with 'oh-two' through 'oh-nine'. Will 2010 become simply 'ten'? Most folks I've heard to date seem to be using 'twenty-ten'. A few have been calling it 'two-thousand-ten'.

Thinking back to the 1900s, I seem to recall we all used 'nineteen-ninety-nine' for 1999 or simply 'ninety-nine'.

I'm sure the standard will be set by TV commentators. As you likely know, we typically adopt their teminology, whether it makes sense or not. Most of those folks seem to be a bit ignorant; but they look really nice and can read a teleprompter. Which reminds me; that's how our current president got elected...reading his teleprompter!!!

Ponder it and let me know,
JD

PS - I'm a 'twenty-ten' kinda guy myself. Years from now, we can all look back and talk about back in 'ten' when times were really tough!!!

I Am An Ice Cruncher Kinda Guy

Are you an ice cruncher? Is your drink not gone until you eat all the ice too? I'm here today to confess that I am an ice cruncher! Foto shows the essentials. Ice slivers (crescent shaped thingies) from fridge ice maker, a gallon jug of unsweetened tea made with a gallon size Lipton Iced Tea bag and Sweet and Low packets...not shown is my ol' stained 22oz plastic iced tea cup with handle.

I'm an iced tea drinker and I cannot possibly finish off a glass until I've also eaten all the ice. I have an obsession to make that happen. If I leave the cup setting around with ice in it, I'll eventually eat it all, even without any tea remaining.

I pour room-temperature tea over about 3/4 full cup of ice slivers and some sweet and low to generate a cup of deliciously cold iced tea. The ice slivers melt just enough that I can take one in my mouth with each sip of tea. My goal is to finish the iced tea and the ice slivers at the same time. :-)

My cup of iced tea usually lasts thru a lunch sandwich and chips and acts as a finale for the meal. Good Stuff!

I'm sure there are many downers from crunching ice. At my ripe old age, the most obvious downer is the deterioration of my teeth. Think about it, I'm drinking iced tea and crunching the ice with my teeth. Obviously, my whole mouth is very cold and the teeth are likely more brittle when they're almost frozen.

My dentist, ol' Doc Lewin over in Laurel is constantly telling me all the things I shouldn't be doing, one is crunching ice and breaking my teeth. But it's like any other addiction, you're gonna do it until you convince yourself to stop.

My teeth are kind of stained from the constant flow of iced tea and I have more crowns than you can imagine. So it's about time for me to quit crunching ice. I'm gonna have to ponder how to make it happen!

Ponder it,
JD
