I don't recall anyone really talking about it, but paying to shop at COSTCO and SAM'S does have advantages beyond having access to some really good deals on excellent quality products.
Requiring membership to shop keeps out the riffraff. You don't run into weird folks at Costco and Sams nor do you typically run into folks trying to rob you in the parking lot. Generally speaking, folks who don't belong aren't around. It's kind of like having your own private shopping area; your own safe haven for shopping.
Look around and ponder it next time you visit a dollar store... ...

PS - I didn't include BJ's as I don't have a BJ's membership, but suspect same would be true for shopping there.
