Why do we go to the polls to vote? Typically it's because we feel very strongly about a candidate or an issue. Here in O'Malley's Maryland Playground many folks feel very strongly about some ballot questions.
One ballot question is about the dreadfully gerrymandered districts created in Maryland after the last census. The option is there to direct the Maryland legislature to redo the district creation. A lot of folks are pissed about that.
Another major issue is gambling venues and table games at those venues requiring a restructuring of the existing gambling model for Maryland. And, of course, increased revenues for Maryland government to spend as it sees fit...oh, and increased profit for the folks that run the gambling establishments.
Being an overwhelmingly Democrat voter registration state, there's no question regarding the final recipient of Maryland's electoral votes after the Nov Presidential election. They will go to reelect the President. I sense much voter apathy here in Maryland. I don't see a strong turnout at the polls unless voters feel strongly about one of the ballot question issues.
I don't know that the whole country is apathetic toward this presidential election, but I believe it is. I don't sense strong feelings in either direction regarding Mr. Romney. I don't sense the strong, support for Mr. Obama that was prevalent in 2008. The only truly strong feeling I sense about this election is the strong dislike, almost hatred, of Mr. Obama and his performance as POTUS during this term.
Apathy among his supporters and dislike/hatred among the other constituents will likely carry this election. Mr. Obama has a tough fight ahead of him. He's spent 4 years pissing people off, it'll be very difficult to energize his supporters in the remaining time before the election.
JD, looking forward to voting on these Maryland ballot questions at the firehouse here in the BToS come Nov 6.
